Why is America so Partisan?

Whenever there is an argument on here it's always between Republicans and Democrats, Liberals and Conservatives. You look at people like Bill O'Reilly often twisting the truth to try and make people think in his way and Liberals are often guilty of it too. I don't understand why Americans don't just have opinions rather than party lines, I mean most politicians are crooks anyway.
