Do you have to leave on hair Dyes Longer than Stated on the Box?

Last time i used it, i only had my inner part of the hair dyed red while the outer remained the same. It was Revlon. The box stated 45 Minutes and i did as i was told. I had black hair and tried to dye it burgundy...help? >.<
